In Victoria, the Serious Offenders Act 2018 enhances the protection of the community by allowing a court to impose supervision orders or detention orders for serious sex and violent offenders who:
- have completed their sentence, and
- present an unacceptable risk of harm to the community.
Post sentence orders
Supervision orders allow for the post sentence supervision of serious sex and serious violent offenders who pose an unacceptable risk of committing a serious sex and / or violent offence after their sentence is finished.
Detention orders allow for the continued detention of serious sex and serious violent offenders who pose an unacceptable risk if they were to remain in the community.
The Post Sentence Authority is responsible for monitoring these offenders.
